Event 3- Weak or No Signal

Image
For my last event I thought I would do something on campus at UCLA and incorporate everything I’ve learnt over the quarter.   I attended Weak or No Signal, a UCLA design Media Arts final MFA showcase of the graduate’s works of 2018.   The exhibition was showcased at the New Wight gallery at UCLA’s Broad Art Center, May 17 th until Mat 31 st . I attended the event on Thursday 24 th . I had never been to The New Wight display center, but I believe the showcased was displayed in the perfect location on campus. The doors of the Center opened right out onto the sculpture garden of UCLA campus.   This is really interesting as I had incorporated the sculpture garden for my very first blog of the quarter and enjoyed revisiting for my last blog so I really enjoyed attending this event as I felt it tied in all of the aspects of the things we have learnt this quarter.   As stated in the pamphlet of the show it “ articulated contemporary subject matters, from hyper-mediated social relationsh

Week 9- Space + Art

Image
This week as we were introduced to the last topic of the quarter, and I really felt a connection to the various interactions that that space and art have. Professor Vesna explains that the connection between art and space is shown to our generation not only by scientists but also through various forms of popular culture. I believe the intrigue into space comes from the unknown.   Space is so big and there is so much that we have yet to discover, so of course it is only natural to wonder what is up there. In Professors Vensa’s lecture she explains that different artists have found inspirations to create certain television shows on the unknown.   The creation of shows like Star Trek or The Jetsons is just two examples where artists have created other universes based purely on the imagination. Watching these two shows, may not tell you a lot about the space that you know but it may tell us what is t be predicted for the further discoveries of space, this is the coolest connection

Week 8- NanoTech + Art

This week was super interesting to me as in previous weeks I had somewhat of an understanding of the topic that interacted with art. However, I did not know the various leaps and bound nanotechnology has made over the past years and I also had no concept of how much nanotechnology influences our day to day life. Nanoparticles are the heart of nanotechnology where so many objects use this technology, like ceramic bowls, and the surfaces we use. A really cool example of nanotechnology in its interaction with math and art is the use of the self-cleaning nanoparticle called titanium dioxide. The lotus flower under the microscope has shown that the flowers petals are not smooth they actually have small waxy bumps. This nanotechnology now has been helped in the field of the cleaning where the nanoparticle is self-cleaning, and water resistant. I think because of this discovery the way we use materials and manufacture different cleaning products has become a more efficient task. Like

Week 7- Neuroscience + Art

This week was super interesting as it talked about the relationship between computers and consciousness. I really liked the question Professor Vesna posed of wether computers have consciousness or not; “Are machines expanding our consciousness or are we becoming slaves to the machines?” ( Mind Intro Video ). This is something that I also wonder, we have such a heavy reliance on machines and technology, and I often wonder if this is hindering our own mental capabilities. She then questioned if the mind could be controlled, explaining that she believes so.   I however am a little more sceptical about this, as I do not really think the mind can be controlled. I believe the research done into this idea of technology on the brain is really fascinating, however it is relatively new. As discussed in the lecture by Professor Vesna, the technology of the study of the brain has only been recently discovered, because so much of the recent past in this field has been into how the brain functi

Week 6- BioTech + Art

Alba the Fluorescent bunny Again, this week was super interesting to me as it discussed the way BioTech and art interact in our modern society.   This week’s lecture gave me a clearer understanding of the role Biotechnology has within art, but not only that, how it is integrated into our society through the use of animals.   The most interesting part of the lecture was the discussion of Alba the fluorescent bunny, and its scientific trials that could change the face of medicine in the human body. Alba was injected with the jellyfish bioluminescent genes as a fertilized egg, meaning that its genes were now basically glow in the dark. This experiment, included artist working directly with biologists, geneticists and neuroscientists to inject the flesh of an animal and I believe that we benefit from there finding more than anyone would know.   This was a very beneficial experiment as we can see that scientists could use this experiment in humans by injected different genes.
